Brora was the original distillery at Clynelish. When a new distillery was commissioned on the same site in the 1960s and the old Clynelish closed, it seemed it had gone forever. But it reopened shortly after under the name Brora, and continued production until 1983. It then closed seemingly for good.
Never say never: work is now in progress to reopen Brora yet again, and to celebrate Diageo whisky ambassador Colin Dunn has some whisky from the distillery for us to taste. It's time to find out why it's coming back.
Combining Clynelish's waxy charms with a rich seam of peat smoke, Brora's reputation has grown since it's 1983 closure, and has become a cult dram, with bottles changing hands for thousands of pounds. We are very lucky to be trying Brora bottled through the ages – 1970s, 1990s and 2010s. On top of that we have a pair of cask samples that may one day be released and one more whisky to be announced later...
Whether you're already a fan of this cult classic or have yet to try its charms, this class is unmissable.
