Founded in 1824 by landowner and campaigner for distillery licensing Sir Alexander Ramsay, Fettercairn has run quietly behind the scenes ever since. From the early days, when Ramsay hired local illicit distillers to run his stills, to the present day, where it mostly produces spirit for owner Whyte & Mackay's range of spirit, it has mostly flown under the radar until now.

The distillery emerged from the shadows in 2018 with the launch of an ongoing 12-year-old, a 28-year-old special edition and a pair of long-aged whiskies – a 40- and a 50-year-old. While it's not the first time that the Fettercairn has revealed the distillery's extensive and well-aged whisky stocks, the 12 Year Old is a sign that this time, it's here to stay.
