Founded in 1823 in the wake of the Excise Act, the distillery operated without much incident until 2000, when it was mothballed by owners Allied. That didn't last for long, and it was reborn under the ownership of Angus Dundee, also owners of Tomintoul, who have since been investing in the distillery both as a source of whisky for blending and as a single malt in its own right.

The range is bottled without chill-filtration or colouring and is aimed firmly at whisky connoisseurs. The whisky itself is excellent and increasingly picking up fans around the world.
