John Sober purchased the Mount Gilboa plantation in 1747, taking on not only its sugar cane fields but also its distillery. Sir John Gay Alleyne became the manager and was so successful that after his death the company and distillery were renamed after him – Mount Gay.

Since then, Mount Gay has gone from strength to strength, and is now the biggest producer of rum in Barbados. Blended and bottled without added sugar, Mount Gay's rum is a flagship for Barbados's fruity style around the world.
