Ardnamurchan Distillery began distilling in 2014. Unusually in the whisky industry, ALL the power and heat requirements for the distillery come from local renewables – the river that provides the distillery’s cooling water has a hydro-electricity generator, and the biomass boiler is fuelled by woodchip from local forestry – the overall footprint of the distillery is a light one.
In addition, the by-products of the whisky-making process are recycled on the peninsula – the still energy-rich draff is combined with the pot ale to produce animal feed for use on the peninsula.
Their award-winning sustainable principles, from production to packaging, have won them worldwide media attention, along with their QR code-enabled Blockchain technology that can be found on their whisky bottles.
The Ardnamurchan Distillery produces two signature styles of spirit, one peated and one unpeated. The distillery plans were outlined to produce a full-flavoured malt true to its West Highland region. The entire process has been designed to create an overall flavour profile that is expected from this area: gentle peat smoke, rich oily/honey and dark fruit palate, pepper, sea salt and a little more smoke in the finish.
The first Ardnamurchan single malt was launched successfully in September 2020, and they’ve continued to release batches of their AD Single Malt since then with the addition of their Limited releases and Single Casks, also part of their core range.
