The Cooley distillery was founded in the late 1980s, the first new distillery to open in Ireland in decades. As a new distillery, it produced a range of different whiskies, including Ireland's first moden peated whiskey – Connemara. Despite Ireland being known for its peat bogs, there hadn't been any peaty whiskey in Ireland for a long time, and the style was revived/created by the distillery.
