The distillery was founded by Tag Galyean and John Little, and the pair credit an article in Time magazine on craft distilling with planting the idea for setting up their own distillery – after reading it, Tag decided ‘we should do this’.

In addition to making its own sprits, Smooth Ambler also buys casks of whisky and other spirits that it sources from across America, much like an independent bottler. These casks are bottled under the ‘Old Scout’ label, and are also blended with the distillery's own whisky to make Smooth Ambler Contradiction.
